हिंदू धर्म में भगवान गणेश को प्रथम पूजनीय माना जाता है। किसी भी शुभ कार्य विवाह, ग्रह प्रवेश और भूमि पूजन आदि से पहले गणेशजी की पूजा करके आगे का विधि विधान किया जाता है। शास्‍त्रों में वैसे तो हर माह चतुर्थी को गणेशजी की पूजा का विधान है, लेकिन भाद्रपद के शुक्‍ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी को देश भर में धूमधाम के साथ मनाया जाता है। घर-घर में गणेशजी की स्‍थापना की जाती है। स्‍थापना के बाद 16 प्रकार के उपचारों के साथ गणेशजी की पूजा की जाती है।

हिंदू चंद्र कैलेंडर के अनुसार, यह भाद्रपद माह शुक्ल पक्ष चतुर्थी के दिन मनाया जाता है। मान्यता है कि गणेश जी का जन्म भाद्रपद शुक्ल पक्ष चतुर्थी को हुआ था। इसलिए यह चतुर्थी मुख्य गणेश चतुर्थी या विनायक चतुर्थी कहलाती है। लोक परम्परानुसार इस चतुर्थी को डण्डा चौथ भी कहा जाता है। इसके अलावा यह कलंक चतुर्थी के नाम से भी प्रसिद्ध है।

गणेश चतुर्थी का दिन हिंदू धर्म के लोगों के लिए खास महत्व रखता है। इसलिए भारत में भगवान गणेश के जन्मोत्सव को बड़े ही धूम धाम के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस वर्ष गणेश चतुर्थी 07 सितंबर को मनायी जाएगी। उत्तर भारत में गणेश चतुर्थी को भगवान श्री गणेश जयंती के रूप में मनाया जाता है। खासतौर पर महाराष्ट्र राज्य में इस दिन अलग ही रौनक देखने को मिलती है।

महाराष्ट्र में यह पर्व गणेशोत्सव के तौर पर मनाया जाता है। जो कि दस दिन तक चलता है और अनंत चतुर्दशी (गणेश विसर्जन दिवस) पर समाप्त होता है। इस वर्ष गणपति महोत्सव समारोह 07 सितंबर 2024 से शुरू होगा और 17 सितंबर 2024 तक दस दिनों तक चलेगा और अनंत चतुर्दशी पर समाप्त होगा। इस दिन को अंतिम विसर्जन, गणेश विसर्जन या अनंत चतुर्थी के दिन के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। इसी दिन दिन ही बप्पा की मूर्ति का विसर्जन होता है। विनायक चतुर्थी त्यौहार और उत्सव परिवार के रीति-रिवाजों, परंपराओं और अनुष्ठानों के अनुसार 1,5, 3, 5, 7 या 11 दिनों तक चलता है।
